How to Win Mountain Weekend

Mountain weekend, cabin weekend, away weekend - whatever it's called at your school, it's that time of year. The leaves may be changing, but the necessity of a good flannel is not.

That's right, ladies - get your cooler-painting hands ready because the boys have high expectations. Pinterest is queen and she has set the standard high - break out your best brushes, paints and modge podge & try to keep up.

Or don't. It's up to you. But I'm here today, as a seasoned mountain weekend veteran myself, to give you a few pointers on how to make your Rocky Mountain high the best one yet.

1) YOU CAN NEVER BRING ENOUGH. Your date expects you to put alcohol in that cooler and that's no secret - but ladies, there's no need to cater to only him. No one likes a sour date who miserably sulks and takes two sips of her date's Jack all weekend. If you don't like the same things, there's no rule that says you can't get something for yourself, too. I mean, you're already painting the whole cooler - might as well enjoy what's in it!

2) SNACKS. I'm mentioning your favorite thing because it's often overlooked. I don't know what goes on where you're from, but we wear giant flannels and warm snuggly sweaters on our weekends, therefore you have no fear in packing all of your (and your date's) favorite snacks. There are a few reasons why this is important - for one thing, you'll win the date of the year trophy for sure. There will be no question as to who won mountain weekend. The second reason is that food is going to run short. This is a trip planned by males, and we all know they don't quite think ahead as well as we do. So have your snacks on deck. You'll thank me later.

3) WHO ARE YOU GOING WITH? So you've been asked, painted the cooler and packed it. Done. But do you even know your date? Is this a boyfriend or some kind of random set up? Check up on who you're going with and be sure it's going to be worth it before you say yes. If none of your friends are going, and you barely know the guy, you might be brewing a recipe for drama. Make sure to consider who you'll be surrounding yourself with to ensure a good time.

4) WATCH YOURSELF. Speaking of surroundings - what happens in the mountains doesn't stay in the mountains, no matter what they tell you. Have a good time. Take lots of pictures. But remember that everything is still a reflection on you, your character and your chapter. Don't be that girl that twerked on everything - word spreads like wildfire, especially among boys. They've been planning this all year and they're going to talk about it to their graves. So enjoy your experience but keep it together.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
