I started dancing when I was two years old. After high school, I knew that I wanted to dance in college. I wanted to find a group of people who shared the same interest and love of dance as me. When I moved into my dorm, I was anxiously awaiting the fall involvement fair so I could join a dance group. I was roaming the fair when I talked to the Cavalier Dance Company captains at their table.
I immediately liked the girls as they explained what they do, when their practices are, and what events they perform at. I signed up and I was so excited to start practicing. At the interest meeting, all the girls who were interested sat in Jazzman's while our new captains — seniors Jessica Austin, Samantha Jacobs, and Jessica Paraydsz — introduced themselves and gave us the game plan of the semester. Our first performance was the homecoming parade in October, so we jumped right into the dance.
Our first performance at Homecoming 2015.
On October 17, 2015, and wearing Cabrini gear and black pants, we were excited to perform our dance to "Yonce" by the one and only Beyonce that we learned in three weeks. As a freshman, I was excited to perform in my first homecoming parade, and I was excited to be a part of something on campus. Our first performance was a success and all of us had people coming up to us to say that we did an amazing job.
After our first successful performance, we were invited to perform at the annual Halloween Havoc. We performed a mashup of "Calling All the Monsters" and "Circus" by Brittany Spears. We all gave advice for choreography and we worked really hard for a solid month to put on a successful performance. Dressed in all black with pops of color and covered in fake blood, we nailed the performance, and once again, people told us we did an amazing job.
In December, we got our dance jackets for our performance at the Christmas Tree Lighting. We were so excited to get our jackets and we felt official. During the first semester, we had three successful performances and we improved as individuals and as a group.
For this semester, we are working toward our third annual dance recital on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 at 7 p.m. in Grace Hall and at Relay for Life on Saturday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the Dixon Center. I would not trade this talented group of girls for anything in the world and I can't wait to see where the next few years take us. I am so happy that I decided to keep dancing and find a dance family.
