Rock and roll, heart and soul. These are the words used to describe an era of music that defied new and unseen creativity. A new generation of rock music has fully encapsulated today's culture. New Madrid, a band rooted in being fun, unique, full of life, and energy have reconceptualized the meaning of the rock star into a psych-rock, moving work of art.
I received a phone call on a Thursday afternoon from Ben Hackett, the bass player of New Madrid, with the rest of the band -- Phil McGill, the lead singer and guitarist, Graham Powers, one of the bands guitarists, and Alex Woolley, the drummer, surrounding the phone in their van heading to their next show in Mobile, Alabama.
On how the band met, Hackett stated, "We were hang-gliding in Chattanooga in 2010, which is the most amazing place to hang-glide. Hang-gliding brings people together. "
After this, the band progressed to Hackett's basement to put together what would be an amazing mixture between heavy reverb, psychedelic vibes, and radiating sounds that not only want to make you dance but creates a feeling of natural euphoria.
Athens, Georgia, is where New Madrid played their first show, attracting a sizable crowd. This inspired the band to create an album titled Yardboat, released in 2012.
Yardboat is a phenomenal album -- personal favorites being Country Moon Pt. I & Pt. II. The band's success led them to an album of the year and artist of the year award at the Flagpole Music Awards. New West Records recognized the talent found in New Madrid, leading them to that signing in 2012.
In 2014, the band released SunSwimmer under New West Records and Normal Town Records with more hit songs drawing in a larger fan base, and a tour around both Europe and the United States.
During the tour, New Madrid found Maarten Lammbers. Maarten became the band's "European Spiritual Guide." Unfortunately, Marteen still couldn't save the band from a poorly mixed gin and tonic or two in Germany, which lead to a rough morning and trip to the local Burger King, said the band.
In 2015, New Madrid released the album Dawn Teeth Rattling forming a sonic energy mix with an old style groove and certainly became reverb's biggest fan. "Magnetoception" moves the hips while "Manners" builds up slowly into a head banging, toe tapping song. Every album by New Madrid, up to this point, has been amazing, but on April 29th, 2016 New Madrid's best album yet will release titled MagnetKingMagnetQueen. Songs like "Knots," which focuses on a reverb heavy, mind-bending listen, brings you back in time when rock really moved the soul, and "Darker Parts" that brings back the toe-tapping, hip moving action that New Madrid loves. Tim, the band's other spiritual guide, would certainly be proud after listening to this album.
All the band's hard work and dedication to their music will lead them to California towards the end of their tour where, hopefully, no more flat tires will pull them off to the side of the road, and maybe Ilana Glazer might tag along at some point. Before making their way to California, New Madrid will be making a stop in Nashville on April 28, 2016, at Grimey's for an album release show, and then later at the Basement East for a full set.
