You know you’ve wanted to have a twin at some point in your life... probably at about 7 a.m. on a Monday when you really wanted to skip class and wished you had the convenience of sending a doppelganger in your place. Well, I’m in the roughly 3 percent of humanity that does have a twin, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that's not how it works. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been asked what it’s like to be a twin, so this is my answer for all of you who don’t have a womb-mate (one of the many terrible puns Kaylee and I have come up with). And for my fellow twins, this is a celebration of your other half.
In my experience, being a twin is like:
1. Having a constant partner in life. A twin is there through the best…
2. ...And the worst.
3. Twinside jokes. A twin laughs with you at things no one else finds funny and catches your subtle glances that communicate something hilarious everyone else is oblivious to.
4. Having a friend everywhere you go. Even in new situations, having a twin means you are never alone, and even if you have no other friends, you always have one.
5. Having differences. Yeah, you and your twin might share a lot of experiences, but you are not the same person. You make different choices, have different hobbies and bring very different strengths to the table. But your difference have come to complement each other beautifully.
6. Wearing matching outfits at least at some point in your life. When you’re little, it’s inevitable.
7. Always having someone who understands what’s going through your head. Telepathy might be a bit of a stretch, but a twin knows you well enough to grasp your feelings about a situation before you have expressed them yourself. Your twin knows when to leave you alone and when to join forces with you.
8. Borderline abuse. Your twin may or may not have stabbed you with a pen and sat on your face. And you may or may not have retaliated with a mascara wand and frequently bruised her using only your palm.
9. Being the first person your other half goes to when any person of the opposite gender is involved. It’s your unspoken duty as a twin.
10. Never having to sugar-coat anything. From, “That outfit looks dumb,” to constructive criticism of your character, you benefit daily from your twin's refusal to hide the ugly truth, whether you like it or not. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. (Proverbs 27:6)
11. Sharing the embarrassment of what your parents did to you when you were little.
12. Blackmail. So much blackmail.
13. Having a personal chauffeur. You almost can't resist waiting two years to get your license when you have someone who goes all the same places as you anyways.
14. Constantly being called the wrong name. Even if you're not identical, the name slip-up happens all the time, and you learn to answer to both of your names.
15. Making an unofficial list of songs that are never to be played again. You heard "Booty Work" enough when your twin had it on repeat for eight hours and are no longer amused.
16. Always having a number one fan. (And getting to be your twin's obnoxious fan too).
17. Never walking through the doors of high school alone. You don't realize how much you love the familiarity of your twin's face until the first day of freshman year, and from that day on, you face the days that greet you with joy and with pain together.
18. Never saying a harder goodbye. If the day comes when the two of you part ways, it's guaranteed to be the strangest day you will ever face. The most constant part of your life can't leave without taking a big piece of your heart with her.
19. Never having a happier reunion. The first time you see each other after extended time apart belongs in a movie.
20. Having a permanent best friend. As twins, you can make each other laugh harder than anyone, and you can hurt each other more than anyone, but you will always be each other's closest friend. Maybe it's simply because you can't get rid of each other, but no relationship parallels the depth of the relationship between twins. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 explains perfectly the reason you're so deeply attached to each other: "Two are better than one, for they have a good return for their labor: if either of them falls down, one can help the other up."
