13 Fun Things To Do In Waco

1. Try all the hole-in-the-wall food places.

When I first moved to Waco, I remember driving by so many of these establishments, wrinkling up my nose, and deciding that I would never try a place bordering two gas stations, lacking a working toilet, and with no actual parking. But the funny thing is that those places you turn your nose up to are the ones with the best service, the yummiest food, and the most "at home" feel.

Please do yourself a favor and try Baris, Clay Pot, OMJ, Coco's, and Café Cap. Oh, and the downtown food trucks are pretty amazing, too.

2. Visit the exotic critter store or stop by Fuzzy Friends.

Don't be afraid to take a drive out to the exotic critter store, y'all. They have albino bunnies, sugar gliders, wallabies, snakes, turtles, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hedgehogs, etc. Best part is that the workers are super cool about you holding all the animals. And if you're not into exotic creatures, and are just looking to play with some puppies and kittens, swing by Fuzzy Friends. The animals are all rescued and are waiting for a home and a new best friend! (My bff Sarah got her dog from there. His name is Trooper.)

3. Tandem bicycling or taking a stroll on the Waco Suspension Bridge.

There's nothing better to do on a beautiful day than to be outside with your best pal or significant other. Take them tandem bicycling around the town and at the Waco suspension bridge! And in the evening when the bridge has all it's lights on, it's perfect for a walk and "tortilla tossing" if you know what that is.

4. Go visit Cameron Park.

If you're an outdoor-lover, please spend a day at Cameron Park. It is one of the state's largest parks and is definitely a huge attraction. There are so many different parks, trails, lakes, and even a zoo! Take a hike, see some monkeys, and end the day watching the sun set on Emmons Cliff.

5. Magnolia Silos.

If you have ever seen the show, "Fixer Upper," you guys know what this place is. Although it does get pretty crowded on the weekends, it's definitely worth it. Buy yourself a candle, get some coffee from the Dichotomy stand, take some cute pictures, and hope that Chip and Joanna will show up.

6. Spend a day at Lake Waco.

Hopefully the weather will allow it, but get a few friends and go have fun at Lake Waco. Swim, tan, and maybe even have a cookout.

7. Stop by the Waco Farmer's Market.

Waking up early on a Saturday morning seems lame, but stopping by the farmer's market is not. There are always amazing vendors and sweet people who run them. Fresh fruits and veggies, Steel City Pops, flowers, organic and homemade beauty supplies, and so much food. Try the crepes! They're to die for.

8. Do the escape rooms.

Have fun solving the custom escape rooms with some friends and family!

9. Jurassic Quest.

Okay this is definitely a fun one. If you love dinosaurs and want to experience them live, get tickets to Jurassic Quest. These are robotic dinosaurs you can pet, ride, and have fun with!

10. BSR Cable Park.

Just look at this water park.

11. Shop at Spice Village.

The shops at Spice Village are in downtown Waco and you will probably be overwhelmed at everything they have there. This would probably be more fun for girls, but browse through all the clothing, jewelry, and cute home items.

12. Kayaking at the Baylor Marina.

This one is pretty self explanatory.

13. Spend a day at the best place on earth, Baylor University!

Take a campus tour! Bring your family! Walk your dogs! Sic 'Em forever.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
