6 Mistakes Freshman Girls Are Known For

16

As I just wrapped up my freshman year of college, I think it’s pretty easy to say that there was plenty of mistakes I made that looking back could have been avoided. But did these mistakes help me grow, and did I have the time of my life living them out? Well, of course. As I look back, I can easily summarize the six mistakes freshman girls are known for. (not just Greek life freshman, but everyone)

1. PARTYING WAY TOO MUCH

Partying way too much is something freshman girls are notorious for. I understand, you’re away from your parents, you’ve made new friends, and hey who doesn’t love to function? Let me be the first one to tell you though that becoming an alcoholic and drinking way too much is not the way to start off your college experience. Getting absorbed in the partying can seriously cause damage to your academic life and social life… you don’t want to be that girl. My right hand advice is leave the partying for the weekends and the studying for the weekdays.

2. SLEEPING AROUND

Okay, so you have all the freedom in the world, and so many college guys to look at. Keep it classy, ladies. Be confident in who are, and always go to parties with girls who you can trust. I know you have a new found freedom, but don’t let that freedom become random hookups with someone you just met, drunken make outs with the guy who got more attractive as the night went on. You’ll regret it; set your standards high ladies…you’d want your husband to also.

3. DITCHING CLASS

Just cause your new BFF thinks they're too cool for class, or the guy you’ve been eyeing since fish camp thinks dartying beats class any day. DON’T DO IT. Going to class is your key to success your freshman year of college. There is no other way to put it, if you want to pass your classes, and then show up. If you want your college career to go on and marry that successful guy, live in your big house, and have the daughter you’ve always wanted with every monogram dress in every color…THEN SHOW UP TO THAT 8AM…and every class after.

4. FRESHMAN 15

The dreaded massacre of every freshman year. Use your meal plan wisely, all those pins your currently pinning on Pintrest on your “fit and healthy” board or whatever cliché name you have on it, well now is the time to use them. School dining halls will hurt you, stay away from the cookies, steer near the salad, and always bring healthy snacks to class. Another no brainer, use the gym, I mean hey you’re paying for it anyway, and who knows the super hot guy you’ve been eyeing could be there.

5. CRYING

College is an emotional roller coaster, but there is no need to embarrass yourself and your friends sober or drunk don’t let your emotions get to you in the fraternity house, the bathroom, the bar, and the elevated services on the dance floor. If you feel your emotions rushing to you at anytime, turn to one of your friends and get home. You’ll save yourself from later embarrassment and keep your reputation the same as when you showed up with your makeup perfectly in tact.

6. PICKING THE WRONG FRIENDS
So you’ve been thrown in a new environment with new people -- choose your friends wisely. College is the time to find out who you truly are and experience new things, don’t let your friends define you and fall into peer pressure. Don’t just befriend the girl standing next to you in the textbook line just because she says "hi." Make sure you’re genuinely getting to know the people you are making your name known with. Don’t just limit your self to frat rats, or study freaks. Create a combination, find the people who love you for who you are and would do anything for you. After all these will be your bridesmaids.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
