8 Tips on Staying Healthy During Finals Season

1. Buy a refillable water bottle and create a daily water intake chart

By doing this, you are constantly aware of how much water you are drinking. It is important to stay hydrated, especially during finals season when you are working long hours. This little trick is a great reminder to drink water throughout your day.

2. Create a comfortable environment for studying.

This is just as important as fueling your body with food and water. Although it may not be apart of your physical health, a comfortable, quiet and relaxing work space feeds your mental health. Being comfortable promotes motivation, and eliminates stress.

3. Pre-prepare meals for the week.

Since finals week is such a time-consuming time, it is important to make sure your body is being fed all of the important nutrients it needs in order to help you do the best you possibly can on your tests. A good way to have delicious meals ready to eat at any moment is to prepare them a couple days in advance! Suggestions for this could be making pasta, frozen veggies, making a salad the night before, freezing fruit for smoothies, etc.

4. Drink an Emergen-C Everyday!

This is an important one, finals week makes every student feel run down, exhausted, and lethargic. By providing your body with some extra vitamin C everyday you are preventing yourself from getting sick, as well as keeping your body strong and your immune system healthy.

5. Sleep!

This one is so obvious but it is so true. It is so tempting to pull all-nighters in effort to learn as much information as you can, although without a full night's sleep your brain cannot physically function at its highest capacity and you are also more likely to pick up a cold! Our brains are incredible, let's give them the best chance to perform as we can.

6. Schedule Schedule Schedule!

Use a planner or a calendar and schedule out times that are for studying and times that are for relaxing and FOLLOW IT. Not only does this help plan out time management to avoid binge studying and procrastinating, it also allows a reward for yourself so that when you are studying you know you have a well earned break coming up in a couple hours. This technique eliminates stress which causes sickness!

7. Pamper yourself!

During these well earned breaks it is important to actually reward yourself for your hard work. This could mean getting out of the house and getting ice cream with your roommates, taking a relaxing bath, or watching an episode of your favorite TV show. A little incentive can go a long way when studying. A happy body and mind means a happy studier!

8. Do not OD on Coffee!

I love my morning fix as much as anyone else, but too much coffee is not healthy! Late nights create tired studiers but an overload of caffeine can cause paranoia, stomach pains, and headaches! Instead of drowning your body in mocha's try natural sources for energy! These include eating apples and mixing coconut oil and peanut butter and then freezing it for energy boosting snacks!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
